In terms of the level of improvements, this can be called an Enhanced edition, and not a full-fledged remaster.
However, all these changes are too insignificant and do not create the feeling of a qualitative leap forward. The image in the new version, of course, has become brighter, the textures are more detailed, and the weather effects are more believable, and the ability to play in 4K will certainly delight the owners of the respective screens. Of course, I was not too lazy to launch the original, so to speak, to fully experience the difference … And, frankly, I was somewhat discouraged. Instead, a copy of the classic Rome: Total War is included. The most significant (and, in fact, the only) game innovation of the remaster is a merchant, a new agent that allows you to build up economic influence and not drown in an ocean of negative balanceīy the way, the usual for strategic remasters function of switching to the “original view” in Total War: Rome Remastered is not. On the other hand, there is a noticeable attempt to increase the picturesqueness of natural landscapes and natural conditions: blinding snowfalls, powerful downpours, thick fogs and a shroud of exhausting haze look good, although they do not strike the imagination. It is difficult to understand what prevented us from slightly rethinking this visual aspect and making the sieges many times more spectacular.
But the local architecture is being destroyed, alas, rather clumsy. The buildings in the settlements are now also made close to modern graphic standards: the masonry of stone buildings, wooden palisades, the tiles of the towers – everything, if desired, can be thoroughly examined, studied and checked against the illustrations in the history textbook. The installation of an additional official package with improved textures, slightly transforming the soldier’s (and not only) “facades”, saves the situation a little. As well as the drawing of warlike faces, sending back to the cozy 2004. But the awkward by today’s standards, the animation of movements in battles has not gone anywhere and in the updated version it looks archaic and inappropriate. Most of the warriors now have noticeable signs: a variety of hairstyles, all kinds of tattoos and facial hair of all styles and sizes. For example, units in the remaster no longer look like an army of clones. However, in inept it is even more terrifying ⇡ # New old “Rome”Īs usual, the main changes in the updated version concerned cosmetic aspects: the game, on the global map, on the battlefields, was transformed and acquired more modern textures, and also received a number of visual improvements.
But still, let’s try to calm down the skepticism and look at the remaster with an unbiased look.Įlephants are a terrible weapon in the right hands. The release of Total War: Rome Remastered seems to be justified only by the financial desires of the publisher. In a word, there is no need to talk about the drought of “total war”, as well as about the soil for nostalgia for the military glory of youth – after all, there are a lot of excellent projects, and even now, well-deserved games look and feel quite decent, except that there will be a little bit of resolution on modern screens tinker. In addition, you can satisfy imperial ambitions in the surroundings of most significant historical eras and even in the world of dark fantasy Warhammer.
